RedBirds reacted to stefffana in The Ping Test
I am a big fan of this test and all my silver coins has been several times checked. I am not using any phone app, but my ears are very sensitive and now, after few years of "pings", I know exactly how should be the sound for all my coins.
This ping test is applicable for any coin (circulated or not), any silver purity, any diameter. The small circulated coins (i.e. 10-25 cents Canada, 3-6 pence UK, etc) can be ping tested "in bulk", by flipping them from one hand to another through the grubby fingers . The sound is very satisfying, feeding the inner greed of the stacker.
I will be honest, I have not tried this with my gold coins.😁

RedBirds reacted to ArgentSmith in The Ping Test
Thought I would start a thread on an unloved but I believe invaluable method of testing Silver/Gold Coins/Rounds. A free app on your phone which is most likely in your pocket whenever you go out. Performed properly with a clean or gloved hand, gently striking with a plastic pen not a hard piece of metal or wood you are effectively performing a non destructive sound resonance test akin to an ultra sound test.
As useful as it is we know the sigma PMT can throw up a number of false positive results, prefer false negative results although sigma is capable of both.
So today I tested a couple of generic silver rounds measuring 38.83mm diameter. they passed the sigma test, could be pure copper weighed in ok but if gold we know tungsten is the same SG. Onto the ping test since. I always like to see 3 stars on this test see below, remember my callipers measured 38.83mm.

RedBirds reacted to CollectForFun in Best place to buy from? Shipping to Ireland (EU)
This site you found belongs to one of the best known German dealers so there shouldn't be any doubt about their trustworthiness.
Regarding your preference of buying from the dealer - from many points of view it's understandable, but there's one undeniable benefit of buying from the forum- you see exactly the coin you get. If you buy from a dealer, especially if it is a "various years" second-hand offer, the coin you get may have some imperfections. You never know until you open the package.
