  1. I'm in, 1st year so please be understanding. for the draw I have 2015 silver Britannia, 1st £50 face value coin the UK has issued. Good luck to everybody!
  2. https://www.thisismoney.co.uk/money/comment/article-12738115/HAMISH-MCRAE-Cheer-turning-point-economic-cycle.html Don't worry folks - all will be well in 2024
  3. Nothing unusual, the haves are only affected to a lesser degree, it's the have-nots that are the ones that genuinely suffer, it's the way of the world.
  4. Don't believe it for one minute, the massive Israeli build up has not happened just to frighten Hamas.
  5. Hopefully due to a de-escallation Just sayin 😟
  6. Before my time, only TSF members could love a troll 😁
  7. Nothing wrong with Leyland, I had several of their vehicles, unfortunately for me they were the odd ones that missed out on the rust proofing (all of them) Red Robbo? you either read a lot or of a certain age. Disgraceful slur!, reported for inappropriate political comment. 😠😠😁
  8. We have an antique fair close by on a fairly regular basis, not a big one, I used to go to almost everyone, mainly looking for gold and silver coins, most are at unrealistic prices, occasionally I might see something of interest, yes you can weigh, magnet test etc but still cannot bring myself to take the risk! question to the great and good on here, would you buy at a fair? if so, what gives you the confidence?
  9. Agreed, but the difference is, on this forum it doesn't end up in an argument of who is right and who is wrong, unlike most other forums whatever the subject and for me, this is a major plus here!
  10. Well that was an interesting weekends entertainment! having followed this thread closely for inspiration, what did I learn as a rookie? it seems that no matter how many charts, graphs, quotes, predictions etc nobody really knows what happens to the price of gold at any one particular time, (almost the first thing you are told as a beginner) clearly if there are many different predictions over a period of time, as in this discussion, somebody may be close to the reality but a lot won't be, so what have I learnt? don't be swayed by what you read, stick to your own instinct or even gut feelings and enjoy the ride! Thanks guys for a really interesting and entertaining thread! 😁
  11. Its actually what baffled me, the letter goes on to say that we have asked you because "you have opened a new account" (yes I did, a savings account attached to a personal account of some 20 years) you have amended personal details we hold for you (no I haven't) A review of your accounts has indicated that we currently don't hold up to date information on your tax residency or whether you are a US citizen (in 20 years you have never asked so go and ask HMRC! or perhaps HMRC don't know!) It appears now that if you have any savings with a bank you now have to declare "Your Tax Residency" be it UK or anywhere else for that matter, a sign of the times with world wide population movements? obviously connected with tax liability on any interest earned, oh well, back to PM's 😜
  12. This is just me letting off steam about banks....again! posted on here earlier about finding a savings account for my wife to move a bit of money from another bank, all done and dusted with a savings account that we have a joint account with at the Halifax, transferred the money, didn't go and dump cash, so far so good! This morning, some 3 weeks later, I, not my wife, got a letter from the Halifax telling me that under FATCA and CRS tax regulations they are required by law to collect information from customers whose tax residency or US citizenship they cant't confirm! they want me to confirm name, address Nat. Ins number etc now we have had this account for 20 years?, same name, same address, I have never lived in the US, I have never paid tax in any other country, the last 24 years I ran the same business, had the same accountant, made tax returns bang on time (and paid!) every year, when I retired I still have to make returns, same accountant, same address, so the question is why the **** do I now have to prove who I am simply because I opened a savings account? I detest banks and the government! 😠 Rant over and thanks guys for listening 😉
  13. Must be getting late, nearly had a heart attack, read this as 4000 gold sovereigns for sale 😮
  14. We all start with questions so whatever you need to ask don't feel its stupid, nobody is going to judge you because you are just starting out, its quite a learning curve so ask away! PS Welcome to the forum!
  15. I did but it has subsequently turned out to be a 17th century cannon so bonus! not really an investment more a toy! I get what you are saying but I am not crazy and you do not know my situation, this is a sum of money that my wife wants to earn a bit back on, yes I know all the reasoning for finding something "better" but she is comfortable with this, that is important and I am not going to interfere, we are at the stage of life where we are lucky enough not to have to screw every last penny to live on and yes, it does help with the tax situation 😉 🙂
  16. Thanks to all, the deed has been done and she has gone with a simple savings account with the Halifax, we have a current account already so it was the easiest thing to do, we went to transfer funds from another bank who promptly blocked the account! so had to spend a good 15 minutes promising them that no I wasn't being told to do this and no I hadn't been told to lie to them, it made no difference that the donor account and the receiving account were in the same name and in the same town just different banks! you have to wonder where all this c**p will end! Going to calm down and look at my pm collection 😁
  17. I have been happy with gold and silver and my wife is happy enough with what I have done in PM's, however, she would like to put some money into "savings" something possibly with fixed amount, term and interest, to be honest, not having had anything to do with this world I am at a bit of a loss, she has always supported and trusted 😮 me with PM's but would like something that "isn't a gamble" personally I have a deep distrust of banks as discussed many times on TSF but as she has supported me I will support her so what's it to be? I have seen many investments discussed on here and have been impressed by the knowledge shown on here so any help and suggestions would be gratefully received!
  18. I think I have realised this! was the exercise good value for money?😃
  19. Is this why I didn't get it! 😞 now ruin my evening!😞 2 were 1998 the others were 1999
  20. Posting this under silver but could equally apply to gold, I went to an auction local to me that I have bought at before, not a lot of interest to me but 12 lots of single silver Britannia's, thought I might be able to nick a bit as I wouldn't be paying internet commissions but no, all of these coins went at around £28 pus commission to internet bidders making them around £34 plus any delivery, the last 2 went to the saleroom at £30 plus commission, these coins were all same date and nothing of significance I assume these internet bidders not aware of TSF or members so are up against dealers premiums I guess they think they have bought at a good price, as to the room bidder who knows! so glad I found TSV where we have members who are prepared to sell at very good prices!
  21. So, not prepared to do your bit for the poor of Hurley! 10 shillings, even numerous 10 shillings isn't much to ask 😞
  22. My money is on him "unfortunately falling from a window"
