AUCTION! 🔨
Circa 12th century AD.
For auction here is a Byzantine scyphate (cup-shaped) coin comprised of 4.16 grams of electrum with a purity of 45% gold. Has been XRF assessed by a supplier.
Many types of these coins exist, and given the extent of wear and clipping on this piece it is hard to identify the exact type. They are generally religious in form, however, tending to boast seated depictions of Christ with signifiant religious figures on the reverse. c.f. with https://en.numista.com/catalogue/pieces296057.html
Merchants would often clip small pieces off the edges of these coins, collect the pieces and over time melt them down into spendable currency. The introduction of reeded edges to coins sought to combat this practice as it would be easier to tell whether there was discontinuity in the edge of the coin.
Melt value of this coin is currently £114.
Start me at £90 and bid in sensible increments.
Fully-insured postage to mainland UK and Northern Ireland will be included in the final bid price.
Auction ends at 8 PM (2000 hours) sharp on Saturday 13th of April. Any bid timestamped with 8 PM (2000 hours) on the day the auction ends is valid, and the highest bid will win. No semantics over the rules please. They are very clear and simple.
Payment via bank transfer to UK business bank account.
Happy biding! 🌟

🇯🇵 Japan 2 Bu and 2 Shu Set – Last Coins of the Samurai
For sale here is a lot of four gold coins from the final era of the Japanese Samurai. Each of these coins are cast from an alloy of gold and silver known as electrum and were produced at various points throughout the 1800's prior to the abolition of the Samurai class during the Meiji era.
Included in this lot are four coins, two having face values of 2 Bu and the other two with face values of 2 Shu. There are four different types in this lot and their respective details are as follows:
🏯 Japan 2 Bu "Ansei Nibukin" ND (1856-1860) – Cast from 5.62 grams of electrum comprised of approximately 20% gold and 80% silver. There are around 1.124 grams of pure gold in this coin.
🎌 Japan 2 Bu "Meiji" (Edo Mint) ND (1868-1869) – Cast from 3 grams of electrum comprised of approximately 22% gold and 78% silver. There are around 0.66 grams of pure gold in this coin.
🏯 Japan 2 Shu "Tenpō Nishukin" ND (1832-1858) – Cast from 1.64 grams of electrum comprised of approximately 30% gold and 70% silver. There are around 0.492 grams of pure gold in this coin.
🎌 Japan 2 Shu "Man'en Nishukin" (ND 1860-1869) – Cast from 0.75 grams of electrum comprised of approximately 23% gold and 77% silver. There are around 0.173 grams of pure gold in this coin.
Each of the above coins were cast within a range of years based on the period in which they were cast and left undated, hence the 'ND' ('no date') designation. All four will come in Quadrum capsules which have been meticulously labeled with the relevant information and KM number for each type.
These types of coin are often referred to as 'shogunate' coinage as they were largely used and hoarded by Japan's ruling military Samurai class. The use of larger percentages of silver than gold in these coins allowed the face value to be kept low, while the gold was seen as a way of the coins always holding value regardless of economic circumstance. It was for these reasons that they were often hoarded by the shogunate, particularly towards their abolition with the end of the feudal period in Japan and the start of the imperial Meiji Restoration.
The two example photographs show these coins hidden within the handle of a samurai sword.
You simply won't find another lot like this at this price point.
Sale price is £450 including fully-insured posted to mainland UK and Northern Ireland.
Payment via bank transfer to UK business bank account.
Thank you! 🌟

Never seen this one before, nice coins @DuncanWylieWilson🤩
They are nice little coins! You tend to see the 100 Kurus coins more regularly but the fractional Kurus coins such as these don't come up as often. These are all lovely examples. Two have just sold. 🌟
