VAT on silver

These days I only buy preowned on the VAT margin scheme, but you’re still paying 20% premiums on kilo bars, more on coins

I received my scrap back from the assay office yesterday that I had melted into a bar.

Over half of the items were Gold plated Sterling so for a bit of fun I payed an extra £35 to have the bar analysed for its Gold content.

The bar weighed around 8500g, the Silver content was disappointingly just under 90%,however the Gold content was 0.24% which equates to just over 20g of Gold if my maths are correct.

I never expected such a high Gold content for plated items.
