I've been looking for a Maklouf Sovereign for my collection.

The price for 85-97 sovereigns have a large premium attached to them, which I assume is due to rarity and only in proof release. Are buyers paying the premium or or is it just inflated seller prices.

TIA

The Maklouf sovereign not only were they only available in proof, the mintage are quite low often under 10000, so will always hold a premium regardless of handled or not.

I have just the one 1997 Maklouf, bought directly from the RM for £149, and it had been at that price since 1983. This was a period of gold stability with gold at about $325 oz. Bullion Sovereigns were £45/£50.
Yes, for some reason the Maklouf, only in proof gold attracts a high premium. BBP have the 1997 priced at over £800! It was his last Sovereign before Rank-Broadley took over. Likewise 1997 was Makloufs first and last appearance on the new circulating £2 coin.

Anyway, Good-luck in finding one….. @8ace

Bought in late 2000 and early 2001, I have 2 Maklouf effigy 5 Sovereign ‘U’ marked from the secondary market. Regular (1985) and Couped (1987) Maklouf effigies. Might be worth looking into.
