Not necessarily handled, but could have been improperly stored. You need to make sure there're no scratches and hairlines, and hopefully the foggy bits are chemical not physical. If it's some hand oil or oxydation reservation removes it. However, if the coin was stored in PVC the damage could be permanent. I don't know Dave's or NGC's secret remedies, but as far as I know PVC is one thing that permanently destroys gold, and nothing saves it.

So what’s the best way of storing proof coins, or coins in general. The majority of mine are in capsules.

Posh bullion. (No offence!) Good investment  @ 3%

👍

Technically, alcohol is a solution..

Personal freedom and economic freedom are indivisible. You can’t have one without the other. You can’t lose one without losing the other.'

Acrylic capsules. Lighthouse makes intercept incerts that absorb oxygen and sulphides, and that prevents toning. Toning is not a bad thing on old silver but people have a different taste for modern proof. You may wish to store your coins in dry places, too. Anything containing chlorine will be bad. Ammonia as well, but unless you live inside a chemical plant there's nothing to worry about.

In the old days (post industrial revolution) people burnt coal. Coal contained sulphur, nitrogen, etc, and toning back then would be a bit different from toning today. Perhaps quicker and deeper. Back then there weren't acrylic capsules designed for coins either.

If we do the right thing this time, we might have to do the right thing again next time.

Ahh yes I’ve seen those. Always thought they were to fit smaller coins, so they wouldn’t move around in the capsule 🙈. Thanks for letting me know. I’ll try and get some this weekend. Many thanks for taking the time to respond 🙏
