closed Cheap Victoria Young Head Shields - £405 plus post

Recommended Posts

Up for grabs are a couple of cheap shields I have recently replaced in my date run

Marsh 83 - 1887 Sydney Sovereign, scarce date with only a million minted.  Decent detail on this one but it has been polished which I do not like
Marsh 49 - 1864 London Sovereign, pretty decent condition, small edge knock at 3 o'clock but still a lot of detail remaining in both the hair and the shield, die 56

Both bullion coins, neither perfect hence the price.

Looking for £405 plus post each, payment by BT, PPF&F or CashApp
UK mainland or NI only sorry, posted next working day

Well done to both parties. And good to see that someone else appreciates the relative scarcity of these late  (1870s and 1880s) Sydney shield sovereigns. I think that they are nearly all undervalued - I could elaborate.

Not sure to be controversial. I'd say many are overvalued , not knocking Kevin of course , decent prices and honest to admit a polished coin which is not always obvious from a photo . I share his dislike hate ) of polished coins.

Of course much will depend on condition. However, if you check out the relevant Sydney mintages for these later years most look on the low side compared to many years for the Victorian shield sovereigns minted in London (sometimes 4,5,7, and, once, 10 million). And for some some years in this later  period London did not mint any sovereigns at all. Moreover, the Sydney mintage figures can  include some proportion of George and the Dragon coins as well as the shield reverse sovereigns. Just my non-expert impression, not a definitive study.

Some of the branch mint young head shields are harder to get than some of the ‘rare’ Londons.

I have been working on my date run a long time and need more colonials than Londons
