1916 Sovereign with no B.P initials

I’ve spotted this 1916 Sovereign over here but wondering why it hasn’t got the B.P initials. I was under the impression that only some very old sovereigns didn’t have initials. All the sovereigns I own have designer initials. I believe it’s a London mint but that might be irrelevant if it’s a fake.

The entire set of initials is missing. It's a bit of a mahoosive red flag.

What’s been going through my mind is that if it was a fake, then why miss something so glaringly obvious. It is strange as I’ve bought quite a bit from this person before, and all has been legit 🤔🤔🤔

You could mention it to the seller. they might not be aware. They then could run a few tests on the coin to see if it tallies with what it should tally with. Otherwise I'd steer clear. There's some very knowledgable members on the site who might be aware of a known error on this date but far as I'm aware if it's missing Mr Pastrami's moniker it's about as real as a two bob note, imo at least.

It could still be gold maybe 21ct as many fakes were done in Italy and the middle east. Is it the same size, thickness and weight as one you know to be genuine. Put them next to each other and see if there is a difference. Having looked at Marsh Sovereign book, no where does it state that there is 1916 london mint with no B.P.

Thanks for the replies

I was thinking of testing it myself, but I didn’t think it could still be a gold fake. I was going to check the weight, dimensions, Do a Sigma test and Ping Test and magnet test. Then if all checked out then ok. However now you also say Marsh says there’s no 1916 without the B.P, then I should probably stay away.

This is why for so many years I stayed clear of sovereigns, as it’s a bit of a minefield. New issue bullion coins and bars I don’t have any problems with.

Even if you buy it and somehow it passes your tests, you many have trouble selling it for the very reason you posted. Save your money for something a bit less dubious lol.

Couldn’t agree more. Obviously hugely disappointed as I thought I found a bargain deal. If it’s too good to be true, it probably is” 🙏🙏🙏

Plenty of bargains on here atm. Esp old sovereigns. No broken noses, false moustaches or missing monikers included lol.

Personally, I think it is probably counterfeit.  Better photos would enable a better determination.

It has a pretty odd look to both obv and rev.  Plus the sword appears to be all sorts of odd.

Always a pleasure.

TSF is great for this type of thing.  Anyone can post details and pics of coins they are considering buying and people help establish if genuine.
