Is it possible to get scrap silver melt and assay'ed to form pure 999 silver?

Recommended Posts

Hi there

so I'm new to the forum and wondering. I've been collecting 925 and 800 silver, at or under spot, for some time with the idea of getting it refined into a bar as I thought this might be  a cost effective way to reduce the premium on buying a large bar.

I've seen a few of the UK assay offices offer melt and assay services. Is there a service that would be able to refine it to pure 999 silver? or would that end up costing more than the premirum on a 1kg bar for instance?

cheers

Maddoc

do people on the forum buy and sell silver antiques/scrap, I couldnt seem to find any listings

Yes. Unfortunately, the appetite for scrap silver or antiques is at a very low level on forum.

People are reluctant to buy scrap (even fully hallmarked) and the prices for fully functional silver objects is usually around spot, rarely I have been able to sell at 5%-10% premium (very good quality items).

Few examples to have an idea:

These are only few examples.

If you want to start selling on forum, I will advise you to describe very accurately your items including weights and dimensions, make good pictures, show clear hallmarks (eventually find online more informations about makers and years).

Will be difficult at beginning, but if the prices will be right, they will sell.

Good luck! If you will need advice from me in the future about hallmarks and silver purities, I am more than happy to help.😊

Cheers!

Stefan.
