Got a question.

WW incuse and WW raised I get that but what is WW in relief??

Also, what is WW buried?

Raised and relief are the same.

I'm not sure about buried, it could technically be incuse but this wouldn't be accurate to me, buried would suggest it's over-struck by something else and buried under it.

I like this one the best!

I prefer circ strikes as I like the design and the field to have the same tone. A much more natural appearance than the silhouette look of proofs.

Shame Vicky wasn't as pretty in real life. Wyon certainly did her a credit.

She wasn't bad looking at one period of her life.😀

Ah you've found the paintings of her in her youth in which she's quite pretty. Unfortunately, these were mostly due to the flattery of the artists for their subject. In the photographs of her taken in the 1840s she's fairly plain and ordinary. See these from 1840:

Hi all, this is my first post so apologies if there is a more relevant topic area!

my grandmother has unfortunately passed away, and I have been looking through some interesting old coin collections that I had found in a drawer - then this popped up (pictures attached). I didn’t think much of it at first as I am inexperienced with coin collecting, however after a bit of research, I realised that this one may be quite interesting! At the moment I’m assuming that she had an old Victorian half-sovereign lying around? Although, I would be more than happy for someone to correct me.

Thanks!

The age differential looks like par for the course. Victoria was 18 when William Wyon created the first ‘shield’ image. At age 81 and 9 children later she was hardly likely to maintain her youthful looks. If anyone is to blame it was her toy boy stud, Prince Albert! …..

Buried is where the bottom half of the WW is not visible - it appears to be buried into the truncation.

Not my circus, not my monkeys
