.500 is 50% silver ( so half the total weight is the pure silver content)

.925 is sterling silver ( so the total pure silver weight is 92.5% )

Arbitrary example... a coin weighs 50grams but is only .925 purity. Multiply 50 x .925 = 46.25 grams of pure silver
