Auctions Including Fake or Highly Suspect Gold Sovereigns

Welcome to TSF. @manofstone

My view is that it’s probably genuine - though no one can tell just looking at the photo. Having it tested might reassure you of its authenticity.

Being in a mount means it has lost a lot of its numismatic value. Certainly looks worn, and/or polished which is to be expected. Removal from the mount might reveal rim damage, so best leave as is. The extra weight, about 1.5 g is probably the 9ct gold holder. I’ve turned the reverse the right way up to compare with the SR image. In good condition you would expect to see the initials WWP around the 3 sides of the belt bucket (William Wellesley Pole) but overall it has lost that sort of detail. Ironically the RM omitted these initials on the 2017 - 200th Anniv. Sovereign!

The 1817 is the most common of the four GIII sovereigns by the way, but still desirable to a collector.

Probably the least ‘expert’ on here, however, to my untrained eye the 1s in the date look a bit strange compared to a picture of what I know is a genuine one? 🤔
