Double Sov - 1887 - Sydney Mint - Does this exist

Hi All,

I have been told previously that there was a Double Sov produced by the Sydney Mint in 1887.  Not sure if Proof or Normal.

Has anyone seen or have information to confirm if this Sov exists?

Apparently so @dicker

This coin was also (rarely) produced in the mint at Sydney, Australia, which is identified by the letter "S" above the centre of the date.

There is a London one available on Bullion by Post right now! buddy!

I am not sure that a double sovereign was produced in Sydney in 1887 - wikipedia is not infallable (and don't forget that there are even errors in the Marsh Sovereign book)!

Are you sure the above picture is of a Sydney double sovereign?

Drake Sterling do have a GB 1887 double sovereign "from an old Sydney coin collection": https://www.drakesterling.com/coins-for-sale/gold-5-and-2/1887-two-pound-pcgs-ms62-40139095

So my quandary is this.  I have a ledger from a chap who passed away some time ago - he essentially piqued my interest in coins a long time back.

There are a couple of entries around Full Sovs that indicate he found an error and die number that is not in Marsh or seem to be referenced anywhere else.

But he also references owning an 1887 Sydney Jubilee Double Sovereign - which we talked about many years ago.  He had sold it some time in the late 80's but was sure it was a Sydney double - however I have not seen it and am therefore somewhat sceptical....

Gents - really big thanks for that - I will update my records.

So my deceased friend probably did own one....interesting.  His record keeping were detailed and precise, it is just a shame he did not take photographs of his coins as a confirmer....
