Silver coins turn 'brown'

Lol, I had some silver do that. Stored it in a wooden box for a few months, and hey presto, brown toning. I'm guessing it was either the wood itself that caused it, or the chemicals used to treat it.

I'd imagine this is the same situation, it does look very similar.

I have some one pound piedforts (from same presentation case) that have started to tone.

They were fine when I bought a few years ago them and have been vaulted with other coins with no toning at all.

At a guess, they were exposed to something before my custodianship that started the toning but it just was not evident at the time.

The toning is somewhat more attractive than the pics above....slightly rainbow with a distinct petrol blue tone

It's a bit of a non-story really. Slow news day perhaps....

I have a few silver proof sets from the RM and i have noticed that coins in capsules that incorporate foam filler definitely tone more and quicker than coins stored in just capsules. I always assumed the mint knew what they were doing and used an inert material for the filler. Maybe not.

The good old Royal Mint.... I gave up with buying direct them after I got a proof coin with a finger print on the coin.

Buying from a dealer means there is at least *some* quality control done before I receive a coin.
