Silver Bar Lustre?

Recommended Posts

Is it me or do most of the silver bars seem to lack the lustre normally associated with silver.

The poured silver bars seems to look the way I expect but the big manufactured bars of silver I see on YouTube and elsewhere always seem to look dull.

Anyone know why?

It could be because bars aren't prepared and stamped the way many coins are? I don't know that for sure, but that's my guess.

Coins, especially proofs and collector grade, are stamped from carefully polished and handled planchets and dies. I'm guessing the same isn't true of most bars.

U-tube is hardly the place to compare the lustre of various bars. A poured bar has folds and ridges that catch the light whereas a Canadian 10 oz bar has a flat mirror finish. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder.

It depends on how they are made and finished. Poured, extruded and stamped will have either a matte or shiny finish. Some companys buff the bars once they cool and some dont...

I think that shiny bars are polished by the manufacturer.

I sincerely hope so, if you buy new they come sealed from the mint. I think you’ll find the “shine” comes from the preparation of the blank and the dies. Take a look at a Tokelau Chronos coin, its beauty is in its simplicity.

I’m on the lookout for a Federal Strategic Reserve bar that looks like its been around the block a few times just by way of a change.

Finding one the isn't going to break the bank is the problem.

You are talking about the Strategic stockpile bars right? They come up on the forum from time to time. I have a 10 oz and a 5 oz as well as a 1 oz round
