How do you carry this out in a cheap/practical manner? Now I’m retired I don’t have access to a laboratory (I worked in the lime and cement industry).

I built a little square frame/basket out of wire with 2 cocktail sticks.  Then glued a bit of mesh screen across the bottom to make a holder to lie my coins on.

Basically I bent the wire into a squared off U shape and joined the two of these together at the bottom with two pieces of stick.  You could leave some extra at the top of these to make hooks so it sits on your container.

I find it easier than trying to tie a bit of thread round a coin that isn't going to slip but if you're good with thread you may be able to make a cradle of sorts.  I found the thread was prone to sliding and the coin would tend to slip out if you dunked it a few times.
