P.S I believe the majority of spots are up in Scotland a few in Ireland, if your unlucky best to visit Alaska if you don’t mind getting wet or down under if you don’t mind getting burnt 😜👍 (You wont even need a pan If you go oz a metal detector should do).

Does anyone here go gold panning? Am interested in trying it for fun and was looking for some advice on UK spots worth going to.

I had a go at it recently in the Scottish Borders. We found one tiny flake from a whole days work but was great fun and a nice way to get outdoors. We went somewhere that hadnt exactly been marked on a map but from a little reading it seemed like it might bear fruit.

Personally I think even if you don’t find anything, it’s the experience that counts :)  But definitely a brilliant day trip with the kids/family/friends 👍

Exactly, I needed a good excuse to get outdoors and it gave me one. Even made a little video of it if anyone is interested:

If only you guys where in a pair of shorts would of made my night haha 😉 but on a serious note awesome stuff, as you mentioned you guys are in the learning process...I’m no expert but have panned in the past & I do believe you may have had too much material in the pan, which can result in a loss of gold. I would possibly invest in one or two more smaller classifier/mesh which would make things a little easier, Neverless good stuff we need more material like this in the uk 👍

I've had a go in the cairngorms but without much luck.  Luckily it was early summer and nice and warm so the very cold water was refreshing rather than a shock.  I still wouldn't have liked to do it all day every day for a while.

I think you may have been a bit vicious and swirling it more gently might be a better method.  You don't want to throw any of the good stuff out and you really just want to wash the fine/lighter sand out without any sudden moves to start.  Then you can work on washing the larger sand out by swishing the pan back and forth with the edge in the stream or swirling again but with the pan tilted into the water more.

I'm sure you know the basic idea.

I saw plenty of iron pyrites when I was looking.  The first sight of the gold colour makes you stop for a minute.
