Are the Silver Kangaroos on eBay mostly Fakes ?

Pete

Recommended Posts

Just observing the number of silver one oz Kangaroos dated in the 90's appearing on eBay and several seem to have suspicious dark marks on the perimeter.

I was about to bid on a Roo a couple of months ago and contacted the seller, enquiring about the blemishes.

Turns out it was a plated base metal version and was immediately withdrawn.

Question is - are there many more fakes in circulation because a few look as if the plating has peeled / chipped so I will not be bidding on any of these for sure.

I remember reading something similar about early kookaburras, where they had some sort of anti-tone coating on them. This started to peel at the edges making them look like fakes. They were actually confirmed as genuine.

It was something like that, may be unrelated though.

Thanks - gives us a bit of hope but the Kangaroo I was watching previously was confirmed a fake so now primed to be suspicious.

Yes Pete, that's another one that people need to watch out for.

I'll stick to my proof roos, less chance of fakes.

The moral of this is to test every coin you receive from an un-trusted vendor.

The odd early Bu coin can get a bit of black toning on the edges, best to buy one in the blister packs if you are concerned about fakes. Re the proofs I personally have not seen any with any toning or blemishes of any kind.

The problem with common sense is, its not that common.

I've got one of each of the first three roos and they have dark marks like they've scraped against something.

They were an ebay purchase a while ago so I would guess that I've tested them.  I'm not sure where they are right now to double check.

Anyway, I imagine that they would be difficult to resell on with these marks so they are probably not worth getting.

Seen many fakes about e-bay. Some descriptions are obvious 999plated, some not so, Got to go for a known trader with good rep. Bargins can still be had there!

I keep an eye on e-bay just in case. Test everything bought on e-bay, claim if it's dodgey and check the descriptions at least twice before bidding.
