Interesting sovereign I'd like to share for your thoughts

Recommended Posts

I picked this coin up today. Let me know your opinion on it!

I have my own thoughts on the coin but for completeness:

- weighs 7.98g

- tests on Sigma as 22ct

- tests on Kee as 22ct

- purchased from dealer with XRF

- Specific gravity matches other sovereigns

Very weak strike on the reverse, specially the horse back and St George's stomach area.

Obverse hair and mustache looks strange, but I've nothing at hand to compare to.

I like to buy the pre-dip dip

First one looks very ‘coppery’ in comparison to the high grade picture. Have you tested for silver content?

I haven't tested for silver - not sure how I would go about that - but yes, it has a very striking tone to it which was what first caught my eye about it

yes, indeed. weakness to the low central areas. More often I see weakness to the high areas.

The perfect shadow around the legend, could it have been mounted in something also?

That smooth ring around the rim did make me wonder about ex mount. Certainly other coins seem to have no ring between the reeding and the denticles.

The central area is weird…a possible concave planchet so wasn’t struck fully?

I like this theory - could well be the case

No expert, but don't like it one bit. Where is George the Turk's left foot!

Maybe just a terrible strike, maybe cast, but too many things wrong for me.

His foot is there, he just lost his boot.

I like to buy the pre-dip dip

The Australian Minted coins are known to have weak strikes. Strike is very weak
