Has anyone got any info on these suspected Denarius coins please.

Recommended Posts

Just been passed these two coins and asked if I want to buy them. They are not the usual coin I'm in to or know anything about. They are from an extended family member and they have had them for some time now. He believes they are silver Roman Denarius weighing 3.3g and 3.4g.

I've had a quick google and to be honest, I've not come up with much only ebay pic's that I haven't got that much trust in and lots of other pictures of similar coins but none that are the same. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

(if you search 261 on 262, you'll find there's a few entries so different varieties)

In general, it's quite easy classify Roman Imperial coins, just search for the reverse & obverse legends in the WildWinds database & then cross reference them with your coins visually using the photos provided.

Brilliant, Many thanks @JTerry3. The coins were my Uncle's. He wanted to sell them to me but he didn't have a price. I told him I know very little about Roman coins and couldn't put a value on them. We had a look but I wasn't very successful in finding much as I didn't really know where to start. Managed to figure out they are Denarius but that was it. In the end, he has now told me he's had them for quite some time and were thrown in as part of a trade he had done for some equipment. They owed him little if anything at all so he has given them to me. With any luck it won't ignite too much interest in me and make me want to collect ancient coins. I have my hands full with my current collecting bug.

That’s really useful.
