Removing scratches on silver

Recommended Posts

There are tons of videos on how to remove scratches from 925 silver. I am assuming 999 is a lot softer so the same method may be too much. Anyone done this?

I have a piece that has a few, it's just a round and would like to smarten it up a little.

I think you've already guessed your answer with 999 silver being so soft. I wouldn't know if there is an easy way of getting scratches out of silver.
@BackyardBullion made a video (very early on with his you tube channel) cleaning 999 bullion with a soft rubber to tidy it up, but says even that will leave micro scratches in the surface.

I would guess you would have to be a master silver smith to get a mirror finish back onto a bullion coin.

Yes I do remember that vid, I will have another look.

Might also have a look at polishing it out.

I would guess it may end up making a mirror surface cloudy, or a dull mirror finish at best?

I've never tried it my self, I will be experimenting on some bullion this week though. I'm going to try antiquing some designs, then polishing the high relief back to a shine. Fingers crossed all will go well and I don't end up spoiling a lovely 2018 dragon bar and a Nuie Owl round.
