It's more of a lesson to keep quiet.  It's not that he had cash at home it's that it was 'well known'.

people should consider locking much of their wealth

in something like a house that can't be easily stolen

from you when you come to retire.

If you've told everyone that you've got stuff at home to rob then it might be best to have something at home to give up at gun point.

You cannot use a lead pipe, but it is OK to use a hammer that you have been using for diy as long as you don't hit him in the back of the head. 

This type of crime is rare in the UK and if one was to keep money at home a smaller sum would be available to divert the scum. I personally do not keep money at home apart from spends.
