Just been speaking with a vending machine engineer at work about the new pound coins. They have been informed by the royal mint that the old pound coins will only take 6 months to be taken out of circulation. I would suggest getting sets of circulated coins put together because there could be an opportunity for some quick profits when these coins are out of circulation

I've tried selling £1 coins on eBay in the past.

The only ones I found worth the effort were some regional issues IOM/Jersey/Gibraltar etc and sometimes the 1988. For some reason just collecting normal/ non-precious metal coins seems a bit train spotter-ish

 

Even so I'm not sure there is a great deal which is collectable about the one pound designs.  There are the capital cites recently but I'm not sure about those either (even though Edinburgh is supposed to be a low mintage relative to the others).
