Sky News Metals Cock-Up

Pete

Recommended Posts

On Sky News today they feature a clip discussing the International Standard for the kilogram held in a safe in Paris.
The presenter tells everyone that the cylinder of metal is TITANIUM whereas we all know it is PLATINUM.

Only wish we could get him on the forum and sell him a kilo of titanium at platinum prices.

How can you get this so wrong ?
Makes you question other stuff for accuracy -  fake news ?? !!

"The International prototype meter bar was created in 1889 at the first General Conference on Weights and Measures, establishing the International Prototype Meter as the distance between two lines on a standard bar composed of an alloy of 90% platinum and 10% iridium, measured at the melting point of ice."

"Titanium was discovered in 1791 by the Reverend William Gregor, an English pastor. Pure titanium was first produced by Matthew A. Hunter, an American metallurgist, in 1910."

It's obvious there is a difference in time here, the first meter bar couldn't have been made from Titanium, even if they wanted to! 😁
