Silver cups 1879

@Elizabeth

So your hallmarks are the key here.

The rectangle with BB is the maker.

The Lion mark is for the type of metal - sterling silver in this case.

the next mark is a faded out lions head indicating it was hallmarked in London

The D in a shield is the year letter - this is was used for 1879

So a quick research and your maker was:-

Benjamin Barling

BB into a rectangle
Benjamin Barling,
The firm was established in 1812 by Benjamin Barling who entered his first mark in 1815. The style of the firm was changed in 1851 (or before) to Benjamin Barling & Sons. The firm was managed by Edwin Barling and his brother William Barling. In 1955 the the firm was converted into a limited liability company as B.Barling & Sons Ltd and became a subsidiary of The Imperial Tobacco Group Ltd, trading from Liverpool. See the section of "TOBACCONISTS, PIPE MAKERS, PIPE MOUNTERS" marks.

Oh and the queens head indicates that the duty (tax) was paid on the item.

Good work there BYB.

Always cast your vote - Spoil your ballot slip. Put 'Spoilt Ballot - I do not consent.' These votes are counted. If you do not do this you are consenting to the tyranny. None of them are fit for purpose.
A tyranny relies on propaganda and force. Once the propaganda fails all that's left is force.

Thanks - I was at the Edinburgh assay office last week and they showed me a lot of great places to research things like this!

The interesting part for me was they were taken over by Imperial Tobacco. This was confusing for me, what was Imperial Tobacco wanting with a silver company. Quite strange until i discovered that pipe making was another part of the Barling business.

I have Jackson's Hallmarks, the big one as well as the pocket edition as well as Tardy's International Hallmarks but still use websites as well like the hallmark wiki and

silvermakersmarks.co.uk
