I have picked up a couple of bits of jewelry and both look like gold,BUT both do not have hallmarks.

Do's this mean they are costume jewelry? can gold be tested another way apart from acid ?as do not have any.

Gold does normally have a hallmark.

Apart from acid, another home test is specific gravity which you can find how-to's online.

Or take it to a "we buy your gold" place, they will soon tell you if it's genuine or not.

There are xray machines most jewellers should have which will tell you composition. XRF testing.

I have an unhallmarked gold ring which I had tested this way. Turns out it is 18ct. Which is nice. :)

Most decent jewelry is hallmarked, sometimes so small is hard to find.

With rings, because the hallmark is on the inside of the band it usually wears off/out after a few years, so an old ring with no hallmarks is quite common.

Don't take any old price they offer. Find out if it's genuine and get an offer from them and then do some maths yourself.

Maybe weigh them yourself before you go and work out the value for 9 & 18 carat.
