Thanks for the link there James. Alas they won't ever reach that grade as I added the half sov as it was missing from the set. The half was bought as proof but in terms of grading I'm a pleb 😄

Thank you for your comments, I had always thought these were quite rare looking elsewhere. Truth is, I have a set that I inherited, so nothing lost. Just scrap plus a bit for proof then ?

You must be absolutely gutted. I wish you well in your dispute op. Raises a question though, is it really worth selling something on ebay for a few quid more than you can get here. Pro's you get a bit more money usually. Cons you might lose your goods and receive nothing in return. That looks like very unbalanced scales to me.

A few years ago I took some scrap silver to the Sheffield Assay office and had it melted and assayed. They even send the drilling chaff back from when they test it in multiple areas. This is what came back. It has a neanderthal beauty about it I feel ( bit like a mother with an ugly baby). Makes for an interesting door stop I guess. Do wish I had it hallmarked though

Thanks for the replies. I'm just wanting to do this as a sh#ts and giggles exercise. The scrap (1907 grams of 925) cost me nothing as came from my fathers estate. I drove to Sheffield assay and just had it melted and assayed as an experience, yes it would have been cheaper to post but ... Now I'm thinking of getting a few extra ounces of scrap and having it made into 2 one kilo bars of bullion. Which would be easier to offload if I ever needed to.

I know there are refineries in the UK but do they deal with individual customers with say 2 kilos of flatware.

Spot price for gold moves by the second and this can be allied to the price of a loose gold coin (carat differences aside). I have a 2005 4 coin proof sov set and it seems to me that these are not priced intra day, if the price for a set is circa 4k and spot rises £50. Sellers aren't varying their asking price daily, it seems. Is there a general lag in proof coins and sets to the prevailing market?

Well mine arrived and unfortunately was damaged, the capsule was broken in a few places and the coin had a couple of scratches. Sharps Pixley were excellent and replaced it immediately and refunded my postage to return. The replacement is better than the original as has no milkiness which original did. They are £934 on their site now and showing stock of 38.

Bit of a thread resurrection, just ordered one from Sharps Pixley at £884.24. Out of interest I ran the numbers to order up to 100 and was allowed to add to basket so they have quite a few in stock.

The lack of Queen Victoria's head lends me further down the import mark theory.

Was thinking of sending it to a precious metal refinery to get it cast. A couple of years ago my father left me a bag of old silver spoons,forks and general old battered scrap that he accumulated from his days as an antique dealer. I took this to Sheffield assay office and they melted it into an ingot and gave a cert of purity 92.6%. This cost about £70 from memory. Dont think they refine to 999 though as basically they test and hallmark. Hence my original question. I can get scrap from some of the antique dealers my father knew. Not looking to get rich just thought it would be fun to have my own silver bullion ingot, maybe 1kg might be easier to source.

I wonder if thats an import mark and not a makers mark. Most makers use letters ie. initials of their name.
