These Rhodesia proof gold coins were issued on 11 November 1966 to mark the first anniversary of Rhodesia’s Unilateral Declaration of Independence (UDI). Formerly known as Southern Rhodesia, this area in southern Africa was a British colony established in 1923 and was comprised of territories of the British South Africa Company (BSAC) which lay south of the Zambezi river. Prior to this the region was informally known as ‘South Zambesia’ until it was annexed by Britain at the behest of Cecil Rhode’s, founder of the BSAC and whom the colony was named after.
