Purchasing a Gold Coin from Germany

Recommended Posts

Hi there,

Apologies if this has already been answered elsewhere (a quick search didnt reveal anything) but I am somewhat out of touch with continental ordering post Brexit.

A particular gold coin I would like is for sale on a German dealership site. I did contact them via email (in English and a translated version via Google translate) to enquire about the coin and any charges that would be involved sending it to the UK but didnt get a response. Can someone advise me if Bullion dealers over there have stopped dealing with UK orders or if it is just possible my email somehow slipped though their net as it were and it is worth trying again?

I believe technically I should not be paying tax on gold coins (the one I want is not a British coin) from Europe?

I havent put the site on here as I am not sure if that is allowed.

Anyway, thanks in advance.

i'm sure some members have ordered coins from the EU since Brexit - in theory you should be able to import most gold coins VAT free as investment gold

https://www.gov.uk/guidance/gold-acquisitions-imports-investments-and-vat-notice-70121#para1-1

2.1 Definition of investment gold

Investment gold is either:

(a) gold of a purity not less than 995 thousandths that is in the form of a bar, or a wafer, of a weight accepted by the bullion markets

(b) a gold coin minted after 1800 that is:

  • of a purity of not less than 900 thousandths
  • or has been, legal tender in its country of origin
  • of a description of coin that is normally sold at a price that does not exceed 180 per cent of the open market value of the gold contained in the coin

(c) an investment gold coin as specified in Investment gold coins (VAT Notice 701/21A).

But beware of your courier - DDP, USP, Fedex, or whoever - charging you UK VAT or import duty that you will have a tiresome business reclaiming from HMRC. And the courier will also probably charge you about £10 for the effort of levying the HMRC charge, which will not be refundable.

HI RDHC,

Ok, assuming I get a positive response from the vendor I will keep this in mind.

Thank you for the heads up
