I have found this Orlando Coin shop very good in past visits especially buying secondhand ASEs and they have ordered me full tubes of new ASEs at good prices.
Not sure if bullion silver is as competitively priced in the USA as it once was looking at sites like Apmex etc compared to GS.be and some EU dealers.
It has been several years since I last visited so maybe worth a visit.

Great, thanks @Pete! Metals lesson 101, but would you see a benefit in the exchange rate buying gold in the US? I was trying to get my (newbie) head around whether it would be in fact cheaper, but the rate seems to match spot for spot.

If that USD/GBP rate should fall (i.e. to say 1.20) would i benefit?

Not 100% certain but I think gold is pretty much priced the same universally and it's down to who is working on the lowest margins to grab any bargain ( rare these days though ).
Prices are set in London in mutilple currencies so exchange rates are taken into account twice a day - London a.m and p.m fix as I understand, but others here will know for sure.
Sovereigns etc might be more expensive buying in the USA than here and shops ( including pawn shops ) can often rip-off the customer who doesn't know any better.
I would stick to silver and if lucky you might see a bargain on platinum as there is no VAT to worry about, until you return to the UK, but okay if inside your free allowance.

Thanks @Pete - I'd need to pay VAT on platinum bringing them back to the UK, right? Appreciate the lesson!

Hey @Pete - the trip is getting closer. Just to call back to this - when you say inside your free allowance, how does that work?

Just to be clear, I'd need to pay VAT on platinum, or I dont need to worry about VAT "unless it's in my allowance"?

Every traveller is permitted to bring goods ( different rules for excise duty alcohol and tobacco ) valued up to £390 into the UK free of any tax or duty

Read the following guidance -

https://www.gov.uk/bringing-goods-into-uk-personal-use/arriving-in-Great-Britain

So you should be able to walk through the green channel with a tube of 20 silver ounces.
Higher value purchases - to remain within the law - need declaring and VAT at 20% will normally be charged on the total value less your personal allowance.
Remember this allowance is per person so if travelling with spouse, companion, children etc they all have this free allowance.

If you mean the silver coloured coin that is in your trouser pocket with some other loose change ???
Where are you hoping to find a Pt coin at a fair price ?

Well quite 🙂 - I mean I was looking at dealers around Tampa and Orlando, which I thought they might tax me on at point of purchase.

I didn't pay any sales tax buying in Florida.
I also didn't spot any platinum but lots of silver Eagles and nice price proofs in original plush boxes.
I was very disappointed and subsequently didn't bother looking further in Pawn shops because their prices were way over the top.
There was a dealer called Gainsville that I nearly called on but time and distance were against me.
Prices were very good a few years back but haven't checked competitiveness for a while.
