Vacuum Packing Coins

'ello!

I've had a few good deals on some surprisingly good grade old UK currency as of late. I've run out of capsules but have a vacuum packer/sealer recently given to me as a gift. Most of my old currency goes into little baggies or tubes, but these recent coins are so good I'm thinking preserving them a bit more conscientiously may be a good idea (they'll likely go to the kids).

Are these vacuum pack machines a good idea in y'all opinion, or is the plastic involved not ideal?

Thanks for any help.

As this got a few views I thought I'd update with what I ended up doing.

Some people have had no issues with vacuum packing and storing coins for long periods reading various posts online, but many have advised against it. The biggest issue seems to be trapping contaminants inside and helping to accelerate tarnishing. The other thing that came up is having the waffle pattern pressed up against one side of the coin causing said pattern to eventually tarnish into the metal. The bags I have are PVC-free food grade ones with the waffle pattern. This could be averted by using a backing of some kind I guess.

I decided not to vacuum pack and risk potentially ruining some really nice coins. I did use the bags and the sealing function of the machine to create coin flips though 🤪

I use one often when I post things to people as it helps keep them intact and less likely to come loose. But I wouldn't pack one if it wasn't in a capsule or something. I don't think I'd use one directly on a coin. For long term storage I put in anti tarnish strips too.
