How do you know a coin is worth grading?

Recommended Posts

Ive got a few Sovereigns and some silver coins that look in pretty good condition, i'm curious to know what to look for to see if they are worth grading or not, is it worth it (will it definitely make the coin be worth more) and how much does grading cost?

Ive never been into graded coins etc so be gentle 😂

Personally - when i get a coin graded through our "MAN" @Numistacker - I do it on the basis it "In effect" gives the coin/s a C.O.A.

By way of example amongst a recent batch - I had - - >>

A very nice (to my eye ) 1967 Sovereign that came back as MS64 (slightly better than I expected as it had a few marks (faint but apparent)

but some half proof Sovereigns came back as - PF69 and PF70 allthree as ULTRA CAMEO!

but as referred to  - Numistacker can advise the best -

Have a look at his sub forum 👍

If you post a few pictures there are people on here who may give you a view.

It may not be worth grading silver unless it is very special - grading can cost more than you spent on the coin.

@Numistacker has a youtube channel with videos showing what coins have been graded.  Have a look at them and then see if your coins compare well with them.

Also be aware that just because your coin may not look great that does not mean it cannot be improved by "conservation" - eg if it has copper spots they can be removed and the coin will look better and be more valuable.

Many sovereigns are worth grading but equally some are not. Stay clear of very worn coins unless very rare years or varieties, only almost perfect bullion sovereigns should be graded and low pops at NGC/PCGS for these can make grading worth while. Stay clear of XF quality Victoria Young heads generally and look for signs sovereigns have been in Jewellery or cleaned or polished. Its a mine field and good quality ungraded sovereigns are not as plentiful as they were.
