To sum up - carrying gifts and other purchases made whilst outside of the EU you are responsible for your actions.

There are notices posted that most people never read but that is no excuse.

Import duty can be charged on many items in addition to VAT.

Gold and silver are exempt from duty but VAT is charged on silver, not gold.

Lower VAT at 5% should be applied to collectors coins but more than likely not.

You are permitted a tax free allowance so anything above that level is liable for VAT at 20% as default.

Our customs people are not interested in 50oz of coins.

They are looking out for the serial smuggler and drug traffickers.

You take your chances but people do get stopped and penalised so work out the benefits vs risk.

Heading to Florida in the not too distant future Keith, any suggestions on where to go for PM's?

Yes this one I found the best.

I spent a fair bit of money with these guys, and would have spent a lot more except I was worried about the import duty as it was there was no one from customs at Manchester airport when we landed.

Enjoy, I did!!!!

I buy from them every time I am in Orlando and their prices are very good.

They can also order tubes of new ASEs at better prices than APMEX.

Always found them very friendly and obliging.

Don't know if its the same in canada but when I went to usa if you keep the reciepts of all the stuff you buy, you can claim back the tax you paid at a desk at the airport before you fly home. Dont know if this would apply to silver though
