New But Old Wedding Ring "Help"

Hi Folks,
I'm after some research help on my mothers wedding ring, my father purchased the ring in 1935.
A few weeks ago my mother asked me to get it cleaned for her, so before I sent it off using my local jewellers I checked out the hallmarks on the ring, my mother was under the understanding that when my father purchased the ring, it was NEW but looking at the hallmarks it looks to me to have been hallmarked in 1897-98. Unfortunately my father passed away in 2002 so I can't ask him.
If I'm correct in my understanding the only problem I have is the "Makers Mark" it looks like "W.M" But I can't find a maker with that mark in Birmingham for that date.

Could some kind soul tell me if I'm correct or not and if possible tell me who the maker is and where they were from.
Thanks and kind regards.
Kev.

I bought new old a few years back in Jenners Edinburgh. A lovely pair of earrings the had my partners birthstone. These earrings had been ordered over 100 years ago but had never been picked up and had been misplaced in a  offsite warehouse. Luckily i found them and bought these lost gems for a wee birthday.
