Possible grade on a 1911 San Fran half eagle

gold

Recommended Posts

The Indian Head half eagles typically go for higher prices than the Liberty head versions, and this one is a very nice specimen.

I'm not an expert, but according to my understanding this one wouldn't be higher than MS-59, since it looks like it has some wear, such as on the cheek and on the flowers around the front of the war bonnet. Or maybe that's just the lighting, but that's what I'm seeing.

Not accounting for any possible rarity factors, I'd still expect this one to sell for at least $475-$500.

Whatabout the zig zag on the headband?  It's hard to tell from the pic but it looks worn as do some of the feathers.

A couple of places look scratched as if someone has rubbed them with something abrasive as well but again the lighting makes it hard to tell.

gives pointers.

Seeing it in person makes it easier to tell if the lustre is still present as well.
