It was a general ebay buy it now where the seller had suggested a possible 3 over 2.

I cannot get a more productive photo as it really needs a dslr with macro. The ones posted are photographs via a cheap 40x magnifier. A normal image enlarged just pixelates.

The Marsh 2002 book greyscan as you can see shows two 'pointed' edges around the ass of the 3 which you can also see on this one I have. In some ways it also looks a little like a double stamp as you can see an additional line round the bottom end of the 3. I am not quite sure how Marsh comes to the conclusion his photo plate shows a 2 because strictly it looks nothing like. In conclusion then, it looks like it has something under the 3 due to those pointed edges. The 4 also looks odd.

By the way just to be clear - the top right photo from yesterday is a different (normal) coin just used as a comparison sample.

  2. 1843 sovereign with date error.

Attached are photos of the full coin with the error. A photo of a normal 1843 dated coin. A photo of the date error stamp which if you have a Marsh 2002 book is shown on page 52 as having a couple of similar charicteristics. In Marsh the error illustrated is a 3 over 2.

The date on the coin its very difficult to photograph and make out

  3. Hi Steve, thank you for the reply and clarification. The word you have picked out is colossal which would seem apt to describe the situation on all fronts !
