  1. I got the memorial quarter sov from BBP and it came in that awful blister pack with wording covering the coin window so I removed it anyway to put in a capsule. For the coronation I got the proof version so can’t speak to how the bullion arrive but honestly I prefer the capsule to those blisters anyway.
  2. I think you have a point with certain collectible coins. However, I don’t wear gloves or baby the circulated coins in my collection unless they are rare. I keep a standard .500 silver 1939 Half Crown on my desk and play with it all day whilst working. Spin it around. Toss it in the air and catch it. Etc etc etc. I like the feel of a circulated silver coin in my hand and so I’m not afraid to touch it. Of course with increasing rarity comes increasing care.
  3. Hey now, Charles COULD get a silver jubilee. His father lived to 99 and his mother 96 so it’s not impossible. You are right that no one alive today will likely ever see another platinum jubilee though.

    1905 Shilling

Thanks! Does the top of the five curl up on yours or is it the lighting? The example I posted seems to have a more level top to the five. Or I could just be imagining things lol.

    1905 Shilling

Yikes! The price being that low would make me suspicious but I’m glad this seller was honest. Thanks for taking a look. I appreciate it. I’m still on the fence about pulling the trigger. I tend to agree on the point of why would someone bother faking a coin in a lower grade but who knows why people do some of the things they do haha. This one is also on eBay and is on the lower end price-wise of current listings. NGC price guide has this coin at $50 for good and $100 for VG and this is listed at the midpoint between those.

    1905 Shilling

Any shilling experts out there know if this coin is commonly faked? It’s the rarest of the 20th century silver shillings so I’m leary about a price of $60 usd when it appears to be in decent condition. The pictures look okay to me but I’m a novice compared to many on this forum so I’d appreciate any options.
  7. That's really cute. An Australian coin will definitely be part of the ten coin run.
  8. Added a Spanish Lynx to the set. Only eight more to go haha.
  9. “The ASEs, Maples, Kooks, Krugs and Pandas depending on your POV, are from former British territories/dominions/colonies” ALMOST right. China was not a colony unless you count Hong Kong but the pandas are decidedly a PRC coin and were minted in China even during the time of British HK. Agree that Britannia is a lovely design though. I do quite like the KCIII portrait with the crown on it though the definitive version is kinda bland.
  10. Just out of curiosity, in the UK is there a charge for a bank wire? Many banks in the US charge a pretty sizable fee for a true wire transfer that would negate any savings from not paying with a credit card unless one were spending several thousands of dollars…certainly not worth it for smaller purchases like most silver. Of course we have the option of paying by electronic check (EFT) without a charge and I know some people use that interchangeably with “wire transfer” but technically (at least in the US) they are different as an E-check has to clear whereas a wire is instantaneous.
  11. The premiums on ASEs are outrageous so that likely plays into it. They are finally coming down a bit so I may eventually get some but I’m American and still prefer Britannias. Libertads are in a similar boat with stratospheric premiums though they have far lower mintages so it makes more sense. They are also the first true silver bullion coin I believe so there is a history behind them that adds to the collectability. And they are beautiful, especially the older series. I love Krugerrands but the silver ones are hard to find here at my LCS. I have bought online though as I like them. Britannias and Maples are much more common at my LCS.
  12. They truly are beautiful coins. I just wish they weren’t priced so high for just UNC coins. The proof coins are only a couple dollars more. I too LOVE the British Monarchs series but I didn’t get in at the beginning and don’t need yet another collection to backdate haha. I do think they missed an opportunity though. They could’ve given us an Edward VIII coin since there are virtually none available to the average collector. Instead they just skipped right over him.
  13. It’s possible and I’m far from an expert. However I always thought transaction fees were more bank policy rather than govt policy. Some banks set high fees for certain transactions whilst others don’t. I know loads of others on here also order from the RM within the UK so hopefully they will chime in. 😁
  14. It may be specific to the credit card you used more so than the dealer. I have bought several times from the Royal Mint and was not charged as a cash transaction with Chase credit cards.
  15. It looks very flat compared to the 1964! Could some of that be the finish though? Matte finishing (or perhaps just general aging) might make the detail easier for the eye to see. The glossy glare masks some detail much like in glossy vs matte photographs? Maybe? Haha.
  16. I collect silver shillings and am working on a date run from 1902-1946 currently. I just started a silver threepence run for the same timeframe (found an old Whitman album on eBay for that one!). Also, just started dipping into sovereigns. Just the 1/4 coronation and 1/4 memorial so far. And working on filling a tube of silver Britannias. In addition, I collect silver or gold coins with cats on them, from any country.
  17. I’m in America but don’t have much interest for a variety of reasons. 1. The premiums are ridiculous for less than an ounce. Also, the proof is going to cost only $4 more than the UNC which I found odd as they are supposed to be made to a higher quality. 2. I love the original Peace dollars as it’s truly a beautiful coin but would rather just buy an old one as there is history attached to it. 3. In general I prefer British coins and collect those in higher quantity.
  18. It’s a really nice design. I got the silver 1 ounce and I may pick up gold 1/10 next pay period.

    Sovereigns

I actually don’t mind the new reddish look as it makes a Sovereign look unique to other gold coins on the market. Other than the Sovereign and the Krugerrand, most gold coins have a similar color so the uniqueness is welcome. That said, the old ones are beautiful as well especially as they were used in circulation so develop character. Portrait-wise I think Edward VIII had the best looking but most of us will never be able to afford one of those and the also outrageously priced, rare George VI would be next on my list. For realistic examples with a king, George V had a far better portrait than Edward VII or KCIII. For queens, I think the Gillick portrait is the prettiest of QEII and the young Victoria is next in line. I like the jubilee Vic for the oddly small crown but it doesn’t seem to age well.
  20. That’s the only one I really want for my collection of cat coins. Lions are a dime a dozen but not often to spot a panther coin. I hope it comes in bullion!
  21. No interest to me either but there are loads of VERY serious Star Wars fans so I feel like these will sell well. And IMO they will keep their premiums if not increase in value.
  22. Supply and demand. At one LCS near me, the 2022 QEII are the cheapest and then the 2023 KCIII are in the middle with the 2023 QEII the most expensive. I suppose the last year with the Queen is more in demand than either older coins with the Queen or the new coin with the King.
