  1. Thanks. It has been like this for probably 150 years and like this it will probably stay for all the remaining years that I will own it.
  2. I was thinking about doing this, but if done badly could make it worse then leaving it alone. Lawrence, if you had this coin, would you risk trying to remove the solder? I agree, after what CollectForFun and ZRPMs have said that the mount has probably saved this coin from the melting pot when coins got changed to Sovereigns, so thanks for that.
  3. Hello member This my 1790 Guinea, I think it is in very good condition, but has been ruined by the soldering. Like the title says, probably lost between 25% and 50% of its value. This must have happened to thousands of good coins. Interested to see what others think Spyder
  4. That is a very good price, if you are into proof sets. Chards are selling same set for £4300.
  5. Best advice I can give you is gold is gold and it is always worth it's scrap value, so if you buy for the right price, meaning close to spot, you will never lose much.
  6. I would add the Mark and Panda
  7. If all else fails, take it to your local pawn shop, if they offer you £1000, then you got a real Gold Britannia
  8. Have a look at this listing. These weigh 27g each from a quick online search (so in total 108g of 925 sterling) and he is weighing with display box and pricing as if it is gold You can buy the same set today on TSF for less then £85 https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/284282077665
  9. The first three Elizabeth II heads are always the best looking as everyone looks their best as adults, when they are in their 20's and 30's. You look at some those guinea coins or even pre Victoria and they would have been better to have had a double sided shield. Stamps still have the best ever looking QEII A base has been set and anyone who payed £400+ will not sell for less now.
  10. I would say, it is the same with the 1989 Sovereign. Completely over price for what was never a rare coin. Same again with the Kew Garden 50p.
  11. Noticed HGM were doing Gillick Sovereigns for £380 yesterday and now they are showing none available and price is up to £436 to match Atkinsons
  12. Anyway, Bought the Marsh Book from your shop
  13. Thanks Lawrence and Dicker with your replies. Thanks for recommending the Marsh book, will look into getting one. Like they say, ''you can never have too much knowledge''. Why are no others commenting on what is wrong with the other coin that Lawrence is not sure about.
  14. Come on Lawrence, tell us, what is troubling you regarding Happypanda88 coin and also now that I have put up a better photo of mine, I can see using a clock face, between 10 and 11 number it does not look correct. Could this just be damaged over the years or is it a cast coin rather then a pressed coin. Going back to the original question is a genuine 1925 SA Half sovereign worth more or is it generally the same as other Half sovereign of this period. Would appreciate your reply. Thanks
  15. I had asked Chris ''How can I close this thread down?'' and was told I can not do it and that it stays in the archive. Very simple solution, If people stop adding to the thread, then it will disappear a few pages deep.
  16. Here is the best picture I have taken using a Samsung Flip 4 belonging to my brother. Lawrence, what have you noticed that raises your suspicion regarding bottom coin photo supplied Happypanda88?
  17. Thanks, that is a good photo
  18. I agree with you regarding ebay. I have not bought any gold coins since that year 2011. Only us ebay now for household odds and sods Thanks, do you recommend any free app to do this. I have looked at cropping last night. still researching to see which is best to use
  19. Thanks Happypanda88 The details on my coin do look slightly off on the dragon side, but are super sharp on the portrait side. Could be a fake. This particular coin was purchased off ebay in Sept 2011 before I even knew my coin dealer. Just to let you know my dealer used to authenticate coins for The British Museum in the past so I have no worries about anything I bought from him. Thanks Dicker I found that article last night via a google search and then noticed that it was talked about in 2017 and it was noticed that there was no . after B or P and George had no left foot. At least my coin has a left foot. Thanks Jake0111 The coins weighs spot on 3.99 grams and looks and sound the same as any other. Next time I am in Hatton Garden, It will get it tested on for metal content.
  20. It was reading your thread that got me thinking as I have the same year and from the same mint. What I did not understand was why would you have replaced it as it was such a low mintage year. If the dealer that sold you the coin said it was genuine. Was it verified that it was a fake?
  21. Hi bluffer, are you asking me why I'm I not bumping my own sales. If this is your question, then the answer is simple. I have nothing to sell at the moment. I original put three listing up to test the waters and quickly noticed that it was pointless at the time, as any interested buyer wanted items sent out first before payment. If I was going to make a lot more I might have considered it, but I was selling at close to spot and in the end took what I wanted to sell to Hatton Garden and got only only £20 less with no stress of things going missing in the post and cash in hand. I did offer cash on pick up but no one obliged or lived too far away. I hope this has answered your question
  22. Dicker, thanks for your advice. Sometimes I get a good photo, but with this coin it goes weird. Will give it another go when it's a sunny day. If I was selling plenty of coins I would invest a proper gear to help sell my coins. You are the third person telling me to crop the image. I will try and do some research about how to do that. It seems everyone is more interested in the photo then trying to answer the question of what are the likely hood of this coin being a fake as the mintage was quite low for this year and is the coin worth just like any other half sovereign from this period.
  23. Could it be that the said coin has gone up in price since listing and he is refusing to sell to try and get more in the future. Either way he is not an honest seller
  24. Look in the members list to see if he is a member. If he is a business member, then he be easy to find
  25. I have noticed that Chris put a notice up telling anyone doing dealing with a certain person that I wont mention as others would have seen. So was this person a scammer and deceived a few as she was selling plenty of gold bars and it seems many were falling over themselves to buy
