Peace and Morgan Silver Dollars

Morgan Silver Dollars and Peace Silver Dollars.

With over 40 years of production, the Silver Morgan Dollar enjoyed a circulation longer than most coins. First minted in 1878, this standard silver dollar lasted through 1904 before being minted once again in 1921. Its name comes from the designer, George T. Morgan, who worked as an Assistant Engraver for the United States Mint at the time.

The Morgan Dollar stands out as one of the oldest official currencies of the United States, with each coin being comprised of 90% silver and a face value of $1 USD. For these reasons, the Silver Morgan Dollar coins maintain a high degree of popularity across silver coin collectors, particularly those with a focus on the 90% silver coins. Although these coins are among the most common US coins from the 1800s, they make a challenging collectible because of their many varieties and production dates. Additionally, many of the Morgan Silver Dollar coins were melted down to support the war effort for the British. After WWI was over, the Peace Dollars came to fruition.

Peace Dollars succeeded the popular Morgan Dollar as a mark of initiation of new and fresh ideas. Mostly, it was a coin to mark peace restored in the world after WWI as a new victory coin available at face value to memorialize World War I. This idea was put forth by the editor of "The Numismatist" in 1918, Mr. Frank Duffield.

Even after a lot of urging by numismatists to release a new coin, Congress was not convinced to pass the bill required to mint these coins. However, under the Act of 1890, a new coin could be introduced at the discretion of the Secretary of Treasury if the old coin had been in mintage for more than 25 years. Hence, the Morgan Dollars were replaced by the new Peace Dollars in December 1921, sidestepping the need for Congress to pass anything at all.
