Private sales might be fine but otherwise there is always some trail especially if people have purchased from places like the Royal Mint.

I'm pretty sure if they really wanted to they would find a way😅

If purchased from a dealer legally they have to see (and copy) ID yes, however there is no record that you still have the gold and haven't subsequently disposed of it.

In effect the way that the govt would confiscate gold would be to make it illegal to buy and sell it. In effect you would be landed with a very illiquid asset, disposal of which would be illegal. I can't see that realistically happening in this day and age however. I think it more likely that they will tax gold the same way they do silver (VAT) and remove CGT exemptions.
