Pobjoy Mint "proof" coins - are they worth it?

Many of the designs look terrible and perhaps are mass-produced for selling through newspaper ads?

But there are some interesting pieces.

The first in the Isle of Man cat series (1988) is being offered at the same price as the recent ones, so clearly there can't have been any real premium growth or rarity value to it. I may still get one though, I like the concept.

Of more interest perhaps is something like the BVI Sapphire Jubilee Incuse 1oz proof - which has an issue limit of 1,952, and they claim that there are less than 30 remaining. £41 excl. VAT.

As a newbie though, I am not sure what represents "good value" for proof coins, or which ones are likely to appreciate.

Any thoughts on these?

As a general rule , royal commemoratives are not a good buy

The one you linked to might only have 30 left but it's taken them over a year to sell under 2000 which shows there's not much demand for it.

Pobjoy do make the odd nice coin but as investments they normally do poorly tbh.

Novelty value at play sometimes. Boaty mc boat face 50 p is making around 100% return. Think they are 50 p specialists got Christmas ones and penguins that have a following. Though I heard that 2016 is the final.angel? Perhaps they have a new mint as the design seems different.

I may steer clear of proof coins until I understand the market more.  I should to stick to my original plan which was to stack silver and gold for long-term security without getting side-tracked into "coin collecting", but the bug has bitten.  I am going to buy new single bullion coins with nice designs as they come out and the premiums are low to stay close to spot - then I will have some nice things to look at as part of the stack, but the main part of the investments will be bulk purchases, even second-hand bars to get close to spot and build up mass rather than getting distracted by pretty things ……..
