How many have survived?

Worn, underweight sovereigns were constantly being taken out of circulation at the bank level and sent to the BoE for exchange for newer, full weight coins. It is impossible to know how many have survived, only an estimated comparison made against other years by observation in real life scenarios.

I think it's possible that the Bank of England may have records of how many sovereigns were taken out of circulation, less likely that there are stats by mintage year of the sovereigns, although it's still not impossible.  I know folks have attempted FOIA requests with the Royal Mint, but has anybody approached the Bank of England about this?

The Sovereign is the quintessentially British coin.  It has a German queen on the front, an Italian waiter on the back, and half of them were made in Australia.

It is possible to build a model that would take all of the data available and plot what survival rates might look like.

This would need some actuarial input to build the model and use “triangles” and probably some hard core compute power.

I don’t have time to work on this at the moment but is something I am interested in doing.

Are there any quants / actuaries here?

Thankyou for your input, judging by the information I have received here it seems to me your idea would create a very useful database, I suspect it would take considerable effort just to get a rough approximation of the survival figures and far beyond my abilities, maybe a collaboration of many could refine the figures over time, best wishes with it if you attempt it

Maybe it could be possible to create an open style database that could be built up over time with interested parties adding relevant information as and when it becomes available just to establish a rough baseline estimate that could be refined over time.. it's just a thought, how possible this would be I've no idea.. best wishes
