What dates are considered "early shields" in regard to Victoria SOVs

Being new to numismatic SOVs, I am unfamiliar with any "cut-off" dates for these nuances. Are the 1st youngheads all considered early shields or is there some pre-1849 qualities that should be considered? Is the pre-1849 preferred among collectors? And what about mintages? Is a VF pre-48 much more sought after than, say an 1871 MS coin? (If both were London Mints and Shields)
