Fab reacted to stefffana in Fruit pocket knife date?
Hi.
I have seen this before on another silver objects. Usually can be two explanations:
1. The knife is part of a set and the date letter and the assay office mark were stamped on other parts of the set.
2. The folding knife had initially a sterling silver holder/case stamped with all the hallmarks.
Cheers!🤗

Late 18th / early 19th century in my view, the lion mark is the lion passant which denotes its sterling silver, the other side profile mark is the monarch mark, looks like George III from the photo, i would have a guess at it being made in London, it is indeed a folding pocket knife with a mother of pearl case, most likely for fruit, however these can sometime be found in sets sometimes with a folding fork and spoon also. if you google pocket fruit knife you may find some more similar im guessing.
hope this helps

Fab got a reaction from stefffana in Fruit pocket knife date?
Thanks for your reply, I was curious why it did not include alphabet? If it did, it would be easier to identify the year.
