Hi @Delphis

This might help, when the next round of mold get printed, ask "the judge" to put some draft angle to the details so the sides are open to the mold (see image below). This should help the patter com out easier leaving all the sand in place.

It would be worth experimenting with the draft angel to see what effects you get and whats the minimum you would need to use. The deeper the detail the more angle you would need. most detailing you would need a minimum of 3 degrees, The shallower the detailing the less angle you can get away with.

Also with the 3D print, if it has ridges from the printing machine (and not smooth edges), the edges will grab hold of the sand when removing it and tear out.

If you can tweak these points, you should get crisper detailing.

Hope this helps 😉

Hi there Monkey!

thank you so much for this great information, The "Judge" is indeed looking at some new designs and prints this week for me, i will indeed pass this on.

it is really interesting to see, i get what you mean looking at the diagram, the one with the slope/draft angle would pull out of the sand easier and make less movement on it, thank you for pointing this out,

would it be ok if a made a video with this information included ? when we re do the print of the space invader and do a comparison of both to show the difference

cheers for taking the time to let me know about this, i will defo put it into practise going forward! never heard of a draft angle before! love this hobby / business learn something new all the time

cheers

Matt

No worries! happy to help and feel free to use the image (I might check the spelling first as I'm a poor speller). I can always save it out high quality if you like?

DM me if you have any other questions or would like any guidance, I'm more then happy to help. I'm not a casting expert but a lot of the knowledge I have from my job is transferable.

Thank you! yes i might be in touch for sure, i will speak with The Judge and see what he can do on the computer to add this angle to the designs, this could be very valuable heading forward as we are looking at doing a lot of similar designs in rounds so would need to incorporate it into those also!

Let me know if you would anything very bespoke. I model 3D cad for a living and can create almost anything. Though I would struggle with organic looking things.
