Update - my wife took it to a gold specialist jewelers, who unfortunately confirmed it was gold powder paint of little value. At the same time the wife's sister tried some of the powder using a home testing kit, but when the acid was dropped on it, it completely disappeared.
So, it looks like it has very little value, which is a pity as we have about 1kg of the stuff.
Anyway, thanks for the help.
