Hi guys, my names John and I'm from the UK. Im planning on investing in some gold coins but have never purchased any gold or silver before so I thought that I'd join this forum and do some research.

My interest is to invest so I want to buy coins that I can sell easily to shops/traders. I don't really want to have to advertise them or use eBay etc, so I am think of purchasing a few bullion 2017 Britannias from the royal mint. I have read that the Royal mint is expensive but having looked at prices elsewhere they seem to be the cheapest for them and they are also obviously trustworthy. I considered krugerrands but I don't like the colour of them and although it is for investment I still want to have something nice to look at.

Are britannias a good choice as investment coins and is the royal mint a good place to purchase them from?

Also I was just wondering why anybody would buy bullion coins from eBay? I can understand collectible coins that fetch a much higher than spot price but why would anyone pay so much more just for bullion coins?

Welcome to the forum. Not been on the RM site for a while but it maybe a case of "prices from" If you want new bullion Chards, Bairds and Atknson are usually better than RM for prices.

Hi John, I'm also new here, didn't know what I was doing at first. I bought 4, 1oz Britannia Gold coins just as I joined the forum, I wish I had joined prior to buying the Brits, anyhow, I sold them and bought Gold Sovereigns, haven't looked back, fantastic coin...Oh, and welcome by the way.

Your absolutely right, I just checked their websites and they're about £10 cheaper on each Britannia than the royal mint.

Its the fact that you definately wouldn't get any fakes when buying from the royal mint that's draws me to it though, although the price difference is certainly off putting.

I did consider sovereigns but I think I'd rather buy 24 carat coins myself. What makes the sovereign more appealing than the britannia for you?

The Britannia is a nice coin, 24 carat has the same value as 22 carats, the 22 is more robust and less susceptible to damage. The Sovereign I found is not only fantastic to look at but also rich in historical value, for example, I bought a bundle of mixed dates Bullion Sovereigns the other day and spent days studying the mint mark the dates the designers the Monarch, turns out I found a Jubilee coin from Melburn with a low mintage and quite collectable, another one King George the v was from South Africa, that's two for my collection. My goal is to collect I or more from each country the Sovereign was minted. You could take just one of these coins for example and discuss the different features on it for hours on end. I would say that is what appeals to me about the Sovereign.

When I first started stacking, like you, I

bought from the mint as a security issue. Very quickly you appreciate that they over charge and then put your orders to reputable dealers such as I have listed. It is difficult to part with notes initially to convert into metals, then it becomes all too easy through time. All this said, I wish I could still buy sovereigns from the mint for the overpriced cost of £180 per piece when I first began stacking.

Hi Gradius, welcome. I think some questions remain unanswered:

Any common coins from government mints or large private mints but also hallmarked smaller productions like @BackyardBullion are easily recognised by dealers. Worst case they melt it down and pay you spot.

Coins produced from the Royal Mint offer the advantage that you don't have to pay capital gains tax should gold or silver rise to new heights and your stuck is considerable (this could already be the case if gold doubled as after 2008 and you have 10 oz gold).

Some people need to turn their stack back into cash and prefer selling on eBay. If the listing doesn't gain much attention or they price to sell you can get gold under spot. But beware! There are a lot of fake coins around and even very experienced members got fooled! If it's to good to be true it probably is.

Another place to buy is on this forum but it's mostly collectible and less bullion. Having said that watch out for @arshimo2012's offers and as a premium member you should see most offers first.

Hope that is useful
