Just received my first fake full Sovereign off ebay

GameOver

Recommended Posts

As the title says just got my first Sovereign fake off Ebay!!

was a little dubious about the seller as they didn't have many feedbacks, the ones he had where all 100% tho, so i though **** it and took the plunge 🙈

luckily as new member here I had been reading some previous topics on here about scams and fakes, so i followed there advice and recorded the opening and weighing of the Sovereign just incase I needed it.

My suspicion was raised straight away even before I opened the parcel, the post man delivered it through my letter box and did not ask for a signature? i had paid £9.95 for RMSD as stated on his listing so who in there right mind would send £460 - £470 of gold with out tracking and a signature?? especially when you have charged me for that service lol.

ive already contacted the seller telling him its an obvious fake, no reply as of yet. And ive contacted Ebay to request a refund as item is not as described,  just playing the waiting game now as Ebay are allowing him to the 05/10 to reply.

think i will be buying my gold off TSF from now on (i had made this purchase on Ebay before i had joined here)

Yeh, buy off here.

I bought 1 silver coin off ebay a couple of years ago and it is the most magnetic piece of metal I own 😄. Not been back since.

Sweet Jesus, George looks like a south African rasta

the reason for cheap post is to make it take longer to receive. Money is long gone out of bank I'd imagine. Ebay will cover you either way though..

Scammers absolutely love using eBay. They can setup an account and sell their fake items knowing that eBay will cover a buyer who has been scammed.

The scammers can just keep setting up new profiles and offer crazy good deals that someone will end up buying from them even if they have little to no feedback.

I never buy anything over the value of £50 from eBay unless it's a verified trusted seller. I see eBay as a bit of a minefield to be honest.

Hope you get your money back without too much time and hassle 👍

Sounds like a wise decision, especially now you have discovered the silver forum. Best place for buying and selling precious metals 👍

just had a message from Ebay saying the seller is going to except the return and they have sent me a return postage label.

is there any scams I don't know about when returning things?? any advice on what to do? im guessing i should record me wrapping it and posting it (signed for) as a minimum, any other advice??

Record everything, weight, packing, post by special delivery. Accepting a return ( he thought it was real? Doubtful) so only other theory is he needed a quick loan, assuming he refunds in a few days.

"Just received my first fake full Sovereign off ebay"

My first thoughts were to ask were you new to ebay?

From my (limited) experience of ebay 100% feeback means next to nothing.

"My suspicion was raised straight away even before I opened the parcel,"

You could almost tell the it was fake through the packaging!

It would be nice to post the auction link and the sellers page link, possibly with screenshots, so TSF members can see more.

😎

I received a genuine sovereign but it was not the correct year. The seller wrongly accused me of being a scammer and said I was going to return a fake coin, despite having a video of the package being opened.

So I took a video of the same coin being packaged and handed over at the post office in a single take. Merely filming yourself packaging a coin doesn't prove it was still in there when it was posted.

Anyway, I got my money back from eBay without needing that footage, but all the evidence put me in a good stead when the police subsequently ended up having to pay the seller a visit for harassment and malicious communications! Easy to laugh about it now, but it was quite scary at the time looking back.

Hi Lawrence,

I'm not new to Ebay but I am new to buying Gold off Ebay.

I'm a little embarrassed really..... I was driving when I made the purchase,  I do a lot of driving for my job and was in slowly moving stop/start traffic on the motorway so I decided to check check Ebay on my phone.

I saw the new listing for a 1914 sovereign for £500 but also with the best offer option, as they did not have many feedbacks i thought i would give a cheeky offer of £450 + postage.

Normally I would check the sellers page out more, but cos i was driving I made a silly spur of the moment decision and made the offer.

Its only when I went home and checked the seller out more on my home PC later that i started to think it was going to probably be a scammer, so I started looking on the internet about Ebay scam gold and that's when I came across TSF and read up on the advice to record the opening of the parcel and weighing for evidence. (every cloud has a silver lining)

Like I say, after looking on my PC later I feel very embarrassed and would not normally buy from such a seller, I will post the link to the page but please don't judge me too harshly for a spur of the moment buy while driving 😔

Still illegal, and surely you must know that? Probably not the most sensible thing to do if driving is required as a large part of your job.

Good news for you now is that you have found this forum and no longer need to take a chance on eBay until you know what you are buying.  Make complain to eBay via live chat as you are protected and will get your money back.

Good luck
