Ever seen such a toned Sovereign before?

This is what the seller wrote

This coin is in superb condition, it’s been in a sovereign case for 30+ years, hence the colour.

It looks more like he has stored it in jar of urine for 30+ years

I have seen worse (Victoria Shields that seem to have tar on them) but not this on a Gillick - even those that have been stored in PVC / Plastic / Manila envelopes with high sulphur contents.

I would loosely say this is environmental damage but would tend to think this has come into contact with liquid of some type over a prolonged period of time. I note that the discoloured areas are green, so perhaps something that reacts with silver such as sulphur….

I would not bet on how well it might clean up @GoldDiggerDave may be able to comment on that.

Looks like its been in a wet/moist tin with a loads of old loose change........Thing is I have got 2 sovereigns from  the ship wreck RMS Douro  that been on the ocean floor for 114 years and both look better than this coin.

Hopefully someone on here gets it. Would be interesting to see what can be done.

Theoretically you could heat anything under hydrogen or carbon monoxide and fix it, as they do in the steel industry. But this is extremely dangerous as both gases are explosive. Just a thought wouldn't recommend...

If we do the right thing this time, we might have to do the right thing again next time.

I asked the seller about the box. He seemed genuine and 100% feedback. Quick to respond and direct answers. He said it was boxed with another coin that in similar condition. The box was silver with a liner. He doesn't have the box but suspected it was stored in cold damp environment.

I can't find sources to support this... But I once heard from a jeweller that silver tone finds its way onto gold if the two metals were placed together. I can't possibly guess why though.

Totally agree.  Seawater on my Douro MS graded did nothing like this!

Not sure that I buy them from a chemistry perspective or from keepning coins together.  Anyone else seen or head this?

It was just a chat, and I couldn't find much about it either...

I really like the reverse tone. Not keen on the splotchy green colour on the obverse though. Looks like the Queen has been using sun block 5000 suncream.

It'd make a great pocket piece.

Try Goddards Silver Dip, if anything can clean it without spoiling the coin that will.
