Day to day payment system not connected to banks?

Recommended Posts

Hello, someone just asked me about Glint card payment systems, which peg your money to gold.
I basically said the company is in debt & did not recommend it.

Got me thinking though - do any of you use card payment systems or accounts that are not tied to banks?
I was wondering about a top up card type thing that can be used like any normal debit card in a shop.
That way you could sell PM's and then deposit the fiat from bank/paypal (or what ever) - cash maybe into this car or several cards for safety??

What about the post office cards as I remember using one on holiday and it worked well. :)
Does sprott do a card the system btw? I seem to remember seeing that, but they are based in Canada.

Thank you in advance.

I've used Wise for years now. Originally I signed up so I could send and receive payments from Canada more seamlessly and with less fees than I was subjected to at the time. They've rolled out more and more services though as the years have gone on and now I hold a personal as well as a business account with them.

I use the personal account mainly when I travel to Canada. Under the personal account I hold a GBP balance and a Cdn $ balance. Holding both balances means I can use the debit card in either country without really having to pay fees. Canada has become as cashless as things are moving towards here in the UK so I needed a debit card that would work over there and these days its pretty much all I travel with - I don't bother exchanging cash anymore as its just inefficient compared to using my Wise card to either directly pay for transactions there or withdrawal cash there.

I used to do my business banking with Natwest but moved it all over to Wise as I was frankly tired of the fees. I run an online business so its just a lot of simple in, out transactions. If I remember right I had to pay a fee to register and receive the business debit card but there have been no fees since so it has saved me quite a bit. The only drawback is that I've had problems having the Wise statements accepted as official bank statements when I've been asked to provide them. They eventually get accepted after some explanation but its not as smooth as it would be had the statements come from a more recognised financial institution.
